Kalsubai Trek from Pune: A Guide to Maharashtra's Highest Peak
How the overnight Kalsubai sunrise trek from Pune works: height, base village, pickup points, the night climb, what to carry and how hard it really is.

At 1646 m (5400 ft), Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra. It stands in the Sahyadri range inside the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, and on a clear morning the summit temple looks out over Bhandardara and a sea of clouds. It is the trek most people in Pune put at the top of their list, and with good reason.

How the night works
We leave Pune at night and drive to Bari, the base village. After a short break to freshen up, the group starts climbing in the dark with torches on. The aim is simple: be on the summit before the sun.
At the top there is the small Kalsubai temple. You wait for the sunrise, watch the clouds gather in the valleys below, and take your photos. Then the group descends to Bari, has lunch and drives back to Pune.
How hard is it?
Kalsubai is graded Moderate. The climb is steady and long rather than technical, and a lot of effort has gone into making the route easier for trekkers, so first-timers with reasonable fitness can do it. What makes it tiring is the combination: a night with little sleep and a climb that keeps going.
Two or three weeks of brisk walking or stair climbing before the trek make a real difference. Read how we grade our treks for what “Moderate” asks of your legs.
What to carry
The brochure list is short, and every item matters:

- 2 litres of water, plus Enerzal or Glucon-D powder
- Snacks or dry fruits
- An extra pair of clothes and a small towel
- Raincoat, poncho or windcheater (no umbrellas)
- A backpack, not a sling bag

Add a torch or headlamp for the night climb and a warm layer for the summit wait. Our full guide on what to pack for a Sahyadri trek explains why.
